December in Kenya, however your family shows up.

One country, one festive season, two very different holidays. Here’s how Camptrek plans a December safari for multi-generational families and grandparents — and, separately, for couples who just want the two of you.

Two Holidays, One Season

Why December splits into two kinds of trip

Some of you are reading this because you’re trying to get three generations onto one trip without anyone finding it exhausting. Others are here because December is the only window you and your partner have, and you want it to feel like a honeymoon even if it isn’t one.

At Camptrek, we don’t treat “family safari” and “couples safari” as two products with different brochures. We treat them as two different rhythms — pace, camps, transfers, activities — built around the same excellent December wildlife and weather. Which rhythm is right depends on who’s coming, not on the season.

Worth Knowing

December follows Kenya’s short rains, not the middle of them. Expect green landscapes and strong resident wildlife viewing — with the occasional shower, especially in the first two weeks of the month.

Family & Senior vs. Couples

Not a competition — a choice of pace

Families & Seniors

  • Shorter game drives, built-in rest days
  • Family suites & interconnecting rooms
  • Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, Ol Pejeta prioritized
  • Fly between parks where possible
  • Diani or Watamu beach add-on

Couples

  • Flexible pace, no fixed schedule
  • Private tented suites, honeymoon upgrades
  • Maasai Mara & Laikipia prioritized
  • Road or fly — whichever suits the romance
  • Diani, Lamu or Chale Island add-on

Most December bookings are clearly one or the other — but a “sandwich” trip works too: grandparents and grandchildren for the first week, the couple peeling off to the coast alone for the second.

Weather & Wildlife

What December actually looks like on the ground

The short rains taper off through the month, though don’t expect a hard switch — showers can still turn up, especially early on. Daytime temperatures across the main circuits sit comfortably around 24–30°C, and by the third week most areas have settled into drier, clearer conditions.

Fresh vegetation brings active herbivores and the predators that follow them. The resident Big Five are visible across all the major parks, elephant herds are widespread with plenty of water around, and birdlife is close to its yearly peak as migrants from Europe and Asia join Kenya’s own species.

If you’re picturing the wildebeest migration: by December the main herds are generally back in Tanzania’s Serengeti, though timing shifts year to year. What Kenya reliably offers instead is excellent viewing of everything that lives here year-round.

Lions resting in the shade, Maasai Mara

A pride resting through the heat of the day, Maasai Mara — the kind of resident sighting December delivers reliably, migration or not.

How Camptrek Plans December

Three things we look at before anything else

The right pace, not the fullest itinerary

A trip with grandparents or small children needs rest windows and shorter drives built in from day one — not bolted on afterward.

Camps chosen for who’s coming

Family suites and junior ranger programs for one group; private tented decks and honeymoon touches for another. We match the camp to the guest list.

Logistics settled before you land

Private vehicle, guide, flights or road transfers, and Christmas-week availability — arranged well ahead, not figured out on arrival.

Getting Between Parks

Road or flying — especially with grandparents or kids along

When road travel makes sense

Road transfers work well over shorter distances, and for families who enjoy watching the landscape change and want a more immersive, overland feel.

  • Flexibility to stop, photograph and adjust as you go
  • Generally the lower-cost option

When flying is worth it

Flying earns its cost on longer legs — Amboseli to the Mara, for instance — where a full day on the road would otherwise eat into rest time or game-viewing hours.

  • The clear choice for seniors or very young children
  • Turns a travel day back into a holiday day
Booking Ahead for December

December is Kenya’s busiest month, and Christmas week — roughly 20 December to 2 January — is the busiest stretch of it. Camps fill quickly, so confirm accommodation four to six months out if you have a specific lodge or region in mind. If your dates are flexible, traveling before the 20th gets you a noticeably quieter, better-value trip with much the same wildlife and weather.

Choosing Your Style

Private vehicle vs. shared safari

Private safari

  • Private 4×4 vehicle and dedicated guide
  • Game drives timed around naps, rest stops or a preferred pace
  • Personalised camp choice for the group’s ages and needs
  • No waiting on other travellers’ schedules
  • Easy to adapt around mobility or comfort considerations

Shared safari

Suitable for travellers who prioritise a lower price and are comfortable with a fixed schedule and sharing a vehicle with other guests.

For families with grandparents or young children, and for couples wanting privacy, a private safari is almost always the better fit for December specifically — schedules are tighter and camps are fuller.

Budgeting

What actually moves the price in December

Christmas week vs. early December Number of travellers Family suite vs. private tent Flights vs. road transfers Camp category Park & conservation fees Coast extension Private vehicle vs. shared

A private December safari over Christmas week costs more than a shared trip in early December — but it also buys flexibility, privacy and a pace that suits your group. We build the price around your dates, guest count and needs rather than quoting one generic figure.

When to Go

Kenya’s safari calendar, and where December sits

Jan – Feb

Hot & Dry

Clear skies, strong cat sightings, warm days.

Mar – May

Long Rains

Quiet season, lush landscapes, lower rates.

Jun – Aug

Peak Dry Season

Migration season builds in the Mara; busy and dry.

Sep – Oct

Late Migration

Dry, dramatic, still busy across the north.

Nov – Dec ★

Short Rains & Festive Season

Green, resident wildlife strong, book ahead for Christmas.

Two Routes, Same Country

One December, two very different maps

A family safari and a couples’ safari rarely run the same week-by-week route — and they don’t need to. We plan each one around who’s actually coming, then build flights, camps and rest days around that shape.

The two tracks tend to diverge from Nairobi and can overlap in the Maasai Mara, which works well for either kind of trip.

Star-bed sleepouts and private drives in Laikipia, a tented suite in the Mara, then several slow days on the coast. Ask about honeymoon upgrades early — private vehicles, in-room spa treatments and a surprise bush dinner are easy to arrange with enough notice.

Both are starting points, not fixed packages — every Camptrek itinerary is adjusted for length, pace and budget.

Bush picnic under an acacia tree, Maasai Mara

A bush lunch stop in the Mara — this is the pace that makes multi-generational safaris work: nobody is rushed between sightings.

Where You Sleep

Why the right camp matters more than the star rating

The most expensive property isn’t automatically the right one. A camp positioned strategically cuts unnecessary driving and puts you closer to the sightings and rest that matter for your group — for a grandparent, a short walk to the mess tent can matter more than a fifth star.

We weigh location, room configuration, distance between activities and who’s coming together before recommending any camp or lodge.

A Private Bush Moment

The kind of surprise that’s easy to arrange

For couples, this is where the honeymoon upgrades happen — a private table set out under an acacia, a surprise lunch stop away from other vehicles, a sundowner timed to the light.

Ask for it when you enquire; with a little notice, it’s one of the easiest things to build into a December itinerary.

Private bush setting in the Maasai Mara

A private bush stop in the Mara, set up ahead of the vehicle’s arrival.

Packing

What to bring in December

01

Wide-brimmed sun hat & sunglasses

02

A light rain jacket for the odd short-rains shower

03

Layers — warm days, cooler evenings

04

Sunscreen, insect repellent & any regular medication

A soft-sided travel bag is more practical than a hard suitcase once internal flights are part of the route — light aircraft carry strict luggage limits.

Passport, Visas & Health

Entry requirements for Kenya can change, so confirm current rules before departure — including passport validity, visa or e-travel authorisation, yellow fever requirements, and other vaccination or health recommendations. Camptrek can walk you through what’s relevant to your itinerary, but always verify against current official sources before you travel. Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is worth having regardless of age or group.

Extending the Trip

More generations, more days, or just the two of you

Multi-Gen Groups

Bringing the whole family

A private itinerary adapts around ages, driving times and nap schedules. Ask about age restrictions for activities like walking safaris and hot air balloon flights.

Coast

Safari + beach

Finish in Diani, Watamu, Lamu or Chale Island — one of the most popular ways to close out a December trip, for families and couples alike.

Couples

Honeymoon upgrades

Private vehicles, in-room spa treatments, star-bed nights and surprise bush dinners — easy to add with enough notice.

Questions We Hear Often

FAQ

Is December a good time for a Kenya safari?+

Yes. Landscapes are green after the short rains, resident wildlife viewing is strong, and the festive season brings a special atmosphere to camps. The main trade-off is higher demand and pricing around Christmas week.

Can you see the wildebeest migration in Kenya in December?+

Not reliably. By December, the main herds are generally back in Tanzania’s Serengeti, though exact timing varies year to year. Kenya’s resident wildlife — lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, rhino — remains excellent viewing regardless.

Is December too rainy for a safari in Kenya?+

No. December follows the short rains rather than sitting inside them. Expect occasional showers, especially early in the month, alongside increasingly dry, clear conditions as the month goes on.

Is a Kenya safari physically demanding for older travellers?+

Not if it’s planned well. Shorter game drives, a private vehicle, fewer camp changes, and flights instead of long road transfers make a real difference. Most game viewing happens from the vehicle itself.

How far in advance should I book a December safari?+

Four to six months ahead for Christmas and New Year travel. Early December (before the 20th) is more flexible and better value if your dates can move.

Is a private safari worth it for a multi-generational group?+

Usually, yes. A private vehicle lets you set drive length, timing and rest stops entirely around your group, rather than a fixed shared schedule — especially valuable over a busy month like December.

Can I combine a December safari with a beach holiday?+

Yes — it’s one of our most popular December pairings. Three to four safari nights followed by several nights in Diani, Watamu, Lamu or Chale Island works well for families and couples alike.
