Kenya’s legendary Maasai Mara is one of the most famous game reserves in the world. Home to the Big Five, as well as the millions of migrating wildebeest and zebras who thunder across the plain during the Great Migration each year, a luxury Maasai Mara safari is a truly unforgettable experience.
At some point between July and October, the herds pour into the Maasai Mara from the dry plains of Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park. The wildebeest must cross the Mara River on the border, marking the most treacherous point in the journey, with hungry crocodiles waiting patiently beneath the surface.
The sound of millions of clattering hooves and the spray of the water as they crash through the river is an incredible sight and one of Africa’s premier wildlife experiences. Our preferred way to experience the Great Migration is from one of the more remote areas, such as the Mara Triangle, where camps such as Wilderness Mara endeavour to offer an immersive wildlife experience in a quieter location, with positive impact at the forefront.
The landscapes here are characterised by seemingly infinite stretches of golden savannah – a quintessential safari landscape that lets the imagination soar with thoughts of the majestic animals that roam here. The Maasai Mara has one of the highest concentrations of wildlife year-round. The Big Five can all be observed here, along with huge pods of hippos basking in the rivers, cheetahs racing across the savannah and giraffes ambling between the acacia trees.
The reserve itself is named after the Maasai people, who inhabit the area, and you’ll have opportunities to learn about their traditions and lifestyle during your trip. The Maasai have been grazing their cattle on these lands for hundreds of years, and this is still common practice for many, while others use their in-depth knowledge of the land to work as guides in some of the Maasai Mara lodges.
Short answer: the Masai Mara offers some of Africa’s most reliable big-cat viewing, the Great Migration from July to October, and luxury camps within easy reach of Nairobi. It suits first-time visitors and seasoned travellers alike.
The Mara is a year-round destination, but each season feels different.

The national reserve is the classic Mara, home to the famous river crossings. The surrounding private conservancies lease land from Maasai landowners and cap the number of guests and vehicles.
Conservancies also allow activities the reserve does not, such as guided walks and night drives. Explore Olare Motorogi, Mara Plains and Olarro, or read Masai Mara conservancies explained.
The Mara offers everything from classic tented camps to full-service lodges. Some of the properties we work with include:

Scheduled light aircraft fly from Nairobi to Mara airstrips in around an hour. By road, the journey takes about five to six hours, often with a stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint. Most luxury travellers fly in one or both ways to save time.
How many days do you need in the Masai Mara?
Three nights is the ideal minimum. Four to five nights gives you time for conservancy activities and a better chance of a river crossing in season.
When is the Great Migration in the Masai Mara?
The herds usually arrive in July and stay until October. Exact timing depends on the rains each year.
How much is the Masai Mara park fee?
The national reserve charges international visitors $200 per person per day. Conservancy fees are separate and are usually included in your camp rate. See our luxury safari cost guide for a full breakdown.
Is the Masai Mara safe?
Yes. Visitors travel with licensed guides and stay in staffed camps. Read our full guide: is the Masai Mara safe in 2026.
