13-Day Kenya, Tanzania & Zanzibar: The Perfect Bush to Beach Safari
By Camptrek Safaris · Information as of 24 September 2026 · 17-minute read
A 13-day Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar safari combining iconic wildlife, spectacular landscapes, carefully selected accommodation and three nights of Indian Ocean relaxation — the ultimate East African Bush to Beach experience.
What if you could experience the elephants of Amboseli with Mount Kilimanjaro on the horizon, explore the Great Rift Valley, follow wildlife through the Maasai Mara and Serengeti, descend toward the Ngorongoro landscape, and then finish your journey barefoot on a Zanzibar beach?
You can.
Our 13-Day Kenya, Tanzania & Zanzibar Safari is one of Camptrek Safaris’ signature Bush to Beach itineraries because it brings together some of East Africa’s most remarkable wildlife destinations before ending with the tropical beaches and coastal atmosphere of Zanzibar.
This is not a rushed safari designed simply to collect destinations.
It is a carefully paced journey through Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar, giving you time for game drives, landscapes, wildlife encounters, comfortable accommodation and, finally, time to slow down.
Safari. Adventure. Discovery. Beach.
This is the perfect Bush to Beach safari.

Why This Is the Perfect Bush to Beach Safari
The strength of this itinerary is the contrast.
You begin in Kenya’s open savannahs. You move through the Great Rift Valley. You experience the Maasai Mara. You cross into Tanzania and continue through the Serengeti. You explore the Ngorongoro landscape. Then the safari vehicle gives way to the Indian Ocean.
Zanzibar becomes the final chapter of the journey — three nights designed for rest, beaches, warm water, culture and a slower pace after your time in the bush.
Instead of choosing between a wildlife safari and a beach holiday, this itinerary combines both.
The Full 13-Day Itinerary
Tap a day below to expand its full description, photos and accommodation options.
Day 1 — Nairobi to Amboseli National Park (200km, 4–5 hour drive)
Morning: You will be picked up from Jomo Kenyatta Airport to start your journey to Amboseli National Park. Upon arrival at the camp, you will have lunch.
Afternoon: Embark on an afternoon game drive to explore the acacia woodland, freshwater swamps, scrub brush and open plains in search of wildlife. You will return to camp at sunset.
Amboseli National Park covers 392 square kilometers and is renowned for its breathtaking panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest freestanding mountain in Africa (5,895m). Other wildlife here includes cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, gazelles, hippos and more — see Kenya Wildlife Service’s official Amboseli page for current park information.
Please note: you can choose to arrive a day earlier and enjoy what Nairobi has to offer — the Giraffe Centre, David Sheldrick’s Elephant Orphanage, Nairobi National Park, or a city tour combined with lunch at the Tamarind Brasserie or the Carnivore restaurant.

Accommodation: Selected according to your preferred comfort level — Luxury, Upper Mid-Range or Mid-Range — with a range of quality lodges and camps in Amboseli to choose from, subject to availability at time of booking.
Overnight: Amboseli
Day 2 — Full-Day Amboseli Safari
You’ll leave camp after breakfast, carrying a packed lunch to enjoy in the wild, and spend the whole day exploring the marshlands and swamps of Amboseli, fed year-round by subterranean water channels. Elephants and other herbivores gather here in numbers.
You’ll have the option of starting with an early morning game drive to catch animals at their most active, then return to the lodge for breakfast and lunch. During the hottest part of the day, relax at camp — read, listen to music, watch the birds — before heading out again around 4:00pm for another drive through the park. Return to the lodge at sunset for dinner.

Accommodation: Same property as Day 1, selected according to your preferred comfort level and subject to availability.
Overnight: Amboseli
Day 3 — Amboseli to Lake Naivasha (320km, ~5 hour drive)
After breakfast, depart Amboseli National Park and head toward Nairobi, stopping at the Carnivore or Tamarind restaurant for lunch. You’ll then continue west with a stopover at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint, with views of Mt. Longonot and Mt. Suswa.
Proceed to your hotel on the shores of Lake Naivasha, arriving in the late afternoon. Relax by the pool or walk the grounds, home to giraffes, hippos and many bird species.

Accommodation: Selected according to your preferred comfort level — Luxury, Upper Mid-Range or Mid-Range — from our range of Lake Naivasha properties, subject to availability at time of booking.
Overnight: Lake Naivasha
Day 4 — Hell’s Gate, Crescent Island and Lake Nakuru
After breakfast, drive to Hell’s Gate National Park, known for its dramatic cliffs, gorges and volcanic landscape — one of the few parks where you can cycle, walk or hike rather than just drive (bicycles available for rent at the gate).
Next, a boat ride on Lake Naivasha followed by a walking safari at Crescent Island Game Sanctuary, right next to the lake, where the wildlife is relaxed enough for close encounters on foot.
After lunch nearby, continue to Lake Nakuru National Park for an afternoon game drive — known for spectacular flamingo flocks and rhino herds. Check in at your hotel in the evening.

Accommodation: Selected according to your preferred comfort level — Luxury, Upper Mid-Range or Mid-Range — from our range of Lake Nakuru properties, subject to availability at time of booking.
Overnight: Lake Nakuru
Day 5 — Lake Nakuru to Maasai Mara National Reserve (221km, 4–5 hour drive)
Morning: After breakfast, drive through the Rift Valley floor to the Maasai Mara National Reserve, arriving at the lodge in time for lunch.
Afternoon: Your first game drive in the reserve, in search of the Big Five and the herbivores that roam its grasslands. Return to your lodge at sunset for dinner.
The Maasai Mara is one of Kenya’s best places to look for wildlife — big cats (lions, leopards, cheetahs) and elephants are highlights, alongside giraffes, buffaloes, wildebeest, zebras, hippos, hyenas and impala. Bring binoculars: over 500 bird species have been recorded in the reserve.

Accommodation: Selected according to your preferred comfort level — Luxury, Upper Mid-Range or Mid-Range — from our range of Maasai Mara lodges and camps, subject to availability at time of booking.
Overnight: Maasai Mara
Day 6 — Full-Day Maasai Mara Safari
A full day of game viewing across the tree-studded grassland and rolling hills of the Mara — home to leopards, cheetahs, lions and virtually every other species found in Kenya, across roughly 1,500 sq km of savannah.
Lunch is a picnic box enjoyed under a flat-top acacia tree while watching the wildlife graze, before continuing the game drive back toward camp in the late afternoon.
Travellers wanting an even more memorable morning here can add a hot air balloon safari over the Mara — an early-morning flight followed by a bush breakfast after landing, arranged in place of (or before) the day’s game drive.

Accommodation: Same property as Day 5, selected according to your preferred comfort level and subject to availability.
Overnight: Maasai Mara
Day 7 — Maasai Mara to Serengeti National Park, Tanzania (380km, 8–9 hour drive or ~4 hour flight)
Today marks the international transition from Kenya to Tanzania, via the Isebania border post. After completing immigration, you switch vehicles and meet your Tanzanian guide, who takes you into the Serengeti National Park, with lunch served en route.
You’ll arrive at camp in the late afternoon — keep watch for wildlife along the way, since your lodge sits within the park itself, amid the animal activity. Your driver and the camp manager will give you a safety briefing on arrival.
Please note: the overland drive from Maasai Mara to Serengeti can take up to 10 hours including the border crossing and stops, over rough roads. As an alternative, we can arrange a roughly 4-hour flight transfer instead.

Accommodation: Selected according to your preferred comfort level — Luxury, Upper Mid-Range or Mid-Range — from our range of Serengeti camps and lodges, subject to availability at time of booking.
Overnight: Serengeti
Day 8 — Full-Day Serengeti Safari
The day begins with an early morning game drive — a status recognized by the Serengeti’s own UNESCO World Heritage listing — allowing you to catch animals when they’re most active, then return to the lodge for a leisurely breakfast and lunch.
During the hottest part of the day, relax at camp — read, journal, listen to music, watch the birds. In the afternoon, head out again for another drive, returning to the lodge for dinner and another night under the Serengeti stars.
A full-day game drive or an early hot air balloon ride can also be arranged over the Serengeti — ask your tour manager before booking your trip.

Accommodation: Same property as Day 7, selected according to your preferred comfort level and subject to availability.
Overnight: Serengeti
Day 9 — Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater (80km, 2–3 hour drive)
Morning: After an early breakfast, a final game drive through the Serengeti as you exit the park, before departing for Ngorongoro Crater and descending to the crater floor for a half-day tour.
The crater is roughly 20km wide and 600m deep. Its floor holds an unusually concentrated wildlife population — around 20 black rhinos among some 20,000 mammals of various sizes — making it the best place in Tanzania to see rhino. Because the animals here are less wary of vehicles, sightings tend to be closer than elsewhere.
The area carries dual UNESCO World Heritage status for both its natural and cultural significance, including the Laetoli hominid footprints.
After the crater, exit and drive to your lodge on the rim, arriving in time for a late lunch.

Accommodation: Selected according to your preferred comfort level — Luxury, Upper Mid-Range or Mid-Range — from our range of Ngorongoro rim lodges, subject to availability at time of booking.
Overnight: Ngorongoro
Day 10 — Ngorongoro to Zanzibar (Nungwi Beach) via Arusha (160km, 4–5 hour drive, then ~2 hour flight)
After an early breakfast, drive to Arusha Airport for your scheduled flight to Zanzibar, the Spice Island — known for its idyllic beaches, winding cobblestone alleyways and vibrant bazaars.
On arrival, our representative meets you and takes you to the island’s northern beaches. An optional spice plantation visit is available en route — a guided walk through the island’s famous spice trade, with the chance to touch, smell and taste cinnamon, vanilla, ginger and more.
After lunch, continue to Nungwi Beach in the island’s north, arriving with plenty of time to begin your beach stay.

Accommodation: Selected according to your preferred comfort level — Luxury, Upper Mid-Range or Mid-Range — from our range of Nungwi Beach hotels, subject to availability at time of booking.
Overnight: Zanzibar (Nungwi Beach)
Day 11 — Zanzibar, Nungwi Beach: Leisure
A full day exploring one of the best beaches in the world. Nungwi Beach, at the island’s northwestern tip, offers powdery white sand, crystal-blue water and abundant flora and fauna. Relax under a coconut tree, or take up scuba diving, snorkelling or one of the other water activities on offer — we recommend booking these through your hotel.

Accommodation: Same property as Day 10, selected according to your preferred comfort level and subject to availability.
Overnight: Zanzibar (Nungwi Beach)
Day 12 — Zanzibar, Nungwi Beach: Your Final Day
Another free day at the beach. Snorkel in search of exotic fish, try scuba diving (including trips to see the Mnemba Atoll’s dolphins), or simply relax in a hammock under a coconut tree with a book. All aquatic activities should be booked directly through your hotel.

Accommodation: Same property as Day 10, selected according to your preferred comfort level and subject to availability.
Overnight: Zanzibar (Nungwi Beach)
Day 13 — Departure (Nungwi to Zanzibar Airport, ~64km, ~2 hour drive)
Check out this morning and transfer to Zanzibar Airport, marking the end of your safari.
Zanzibar Airport is the most convenient departure point. If you’re instead departing via Dar es Salaam, ferries leave Zanzibar at 7:30am, 9:30am, 12:30pm and 3:30pm — allow enough time to reach the mainland for your onward flight.
We can also arrange a Zanzibar flight connecting to your outbound flight from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport — we recommend not booking that connection before 3:00pm.
No accommodation on departure day.
Why the Pacing Matters
One of the defining features of this itinerary is its pacing. A safari covering several destinations can easily become exhausting if every day is treated as a race to the next attraction. This itinerary takes a different approach.
You have:
- Two nights in Amboseli
- One night in Naivasha
- One night in Nakuru
- Two nights in Maasai Mara
- Two nights in Serengeti
- One night in Ngorongoro
- Three nights in Zanzibar
Kenya safari → Great Rift Valley → Maasai Mara → Tanzania safari → Ngorongoro → Zanzibar
The result is a journey that feels like one continuous experience rather than separate holidays joined together.
Luxury, Mid-Range or Upper Mid-Range
We understand that travellers have different preferences when it comes to accommodation and budget. That is why this itinerary can be designed around different accommodation levels.

Travel Insurance for Your Kenya, Tanzania & Zanzibar Safari
This 13-day itinerary takes you through Kenya, Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, so your travel insurance should be suitable for the entire journey, not just one destination — covering emergency medical treatment, medical evacuation and repatriation, trip cancellation, delays, and lost or delayed baggage.
Tanzania’s 2025 Finance Act also introduced a separate inbound travel insurance requirement for eligible foreign visitors, priced at the Tanzanian-shilling equivalent of US$44 and covering up to 92 days. Zanzibar has run its own mandatory visitor insurance scheme since 1 October 2024, and the two are not currently mutually recognized. We cover both requirements in detail, including how much each scheme could collect, in our dedicated guide: Tanzania’s $44 Travel Insurance: How Much Could the New Scheme Collect?
Because insurance requirements can change, always confirm the latest requirements with the relevant authorities and your insurance provider before travelling.
