There is a side of the Maasai Mara that most travelers never see.
Beyond the main reserve lies a network of private conservancies — vast tracts of protected land owned and managed in partnership with local Maasai communities. These conservancies were created to preserve wildlife, reduce overcrowding, and offer a more exclusive safari experience, and today they represent the highest standard of safari in Kenya.
Located in southwestern Kenya, approximately 260 km from Nairobi (or a 45–60 minute flight), Olare Motorogi Conservancy and Mara Plains Conservancy sit on the edges of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, forming part of the greater Serengeti ecosystem — one of the oldest and most important wildlife systems on Earth.
What makes these conservancies different is not just location — it is how safari is experienced.
Unlike the main reserve:
This allows for experiences that are simply not possible elsewhere:
These conservancies are also among the most wildlife-rich areas in Africa, particularly known for:
Historically, this model of conservation has transformed the Mara ecosystem — providing sustainable income to local communities while protecting wildlife corridors and habitats that would otherwise be lost.
Here, you are not just visiting a park.
You are entering a protected, privately managed wilderness where every detail is designed for exclusivity, conservation, and immersion.
You will find yourself in a place where:
This is the Maasai Mara — but not as most people experience it.
This is the Mara through its private conservancies.

Posted on Tamara EVerified An Unforgetable Experience! Our safari was entitled: 14-DAY SPIRIT & SOUL OF KENYA AND TANZANIA EPIC SAFARI. My brother and I began planning this safari adventure in September 2025. We researched many safari companies, and enquired about safaris with a few of them. After careful consideration, we decided on Camptrek Safaris and are more than pleased and satisfied. Each request for this custom-made safari was fulfilled. Rose has a wealth of information & a great help with initial planning & itinerary adjustments. We visited the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Masai Mara National Park, Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and Amboseli National Park. The accommodations were tented camps in most places. This was expected, as many of them are in the park and there are no fancy hotels. Very comfortable rooms/tents, all with toilets and showers & were more than satisfactory. The price for this 2 week safari was very fair. Our first driver/guide, Samuel, was very informative in describing the animal behavior and excellent in spotting them! These first game drives were absolulty AMAZING. Samuel was excellent in getting to where the animals were & even spotted all of the Big 5 on our second day! We had to change drivers at the Tanzania border, and Alex, our new driver was excellent as well. We spent 2 days in the Central Serengeti and 2 more days in the Southern Serengeti, a full day in each location. Alex was a great spotter, enabling us to see the Big 5 again, as well as lots of wildebeest and calves! Then back to the Kenyan border and another driver. John, our new driver, was as excellent as the other two. Our destination wih him was Ngorongoro Crater & Amboseli National Park. On our final day, John drove us to the Nairobi airport, met there by Rose. Then onward back home. I cannot say enough great things about Camptrek Safaris. They met all of our expectations above and beyond & provided a lifetime of cherised memories! Seeing hundreds of different safari companies while on the game drives, cannot imagine any of them could be better than Camptrek Safaris. A very special thanks to our travel coordinator Rose, and our three drivers - Samuel, Alex, and John.Posted on Jack CVerified Wonderful Trip with Camptrek We absolutely recommend Camptrek, and specifically Ben as your guide/host/wildlife expert. We enjoyed a five-day safari across Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, and Lake Naivasha. Ben was outstanding in safely getting us to each location, and we were immediately greeted upon arrival every time. Every detail was seamless, and if there was a change requested, it was taken into account. Of course, we had an amazing time all over Kenya. This is certainly in large part to Ben’s logistical expertise and great attitude. He is kind, welcoming, and took great care of us. 10/10 recommend and will look forward to returning to book with Camptrek again in the future.Posted on Tony MVerified 14-DAY SPIRIT & SOUL OF KENYA AND TANZANIA EPIC SAFARI. Our safari was entitled: 14-DAY SPIRIT & SOUL OF KENYA AND TANZANIA EPIC SAFARI. My sister and I began planning this safari adventure in September 2025. We researched many safari companies, and enquired about safaris with a few of them. After careful consideration, we decided on Camptrek Safaris and are more than pleased and satisfied. Our travel coordinator, Rose, was very prompt in answering my many, many questions during the planning stage. Each request for this custom-made safari was fulfilled. Rose has a wealth of information in all aspects, from initial planning, itinerary adjustments, payment methods, accommodation arrangements and making sure we got to go to the places we wanted to see. Rose also arranged for a 2 day hotel stay after our arrival in Nairobi so we could adjust to the time change from the U.S., and all of the other accommodations she arranged were more than satisfactory. The price for this 2 week safari was very fair. We visited the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Masai Mara National Park, Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and Amboseli National Park. Our first driver/guide, Samuel, met us at our hotel a bit earlier than arranged, accompanied by Rose. He loaded our luggage into the Land Cruiser and then Rose gave us a briefing as to what our safari would entail. We wanted to stand on the Equator, and that was our first stop. Then we were on to Ol Pejeta for a game drive prior to checking in at our camp. After lunch, we embarked on another game drive. Samuel was very informative in describing the animal behavior and excellent in spotting them. We took another game drive on the way to Lake Naivasha. We took a boat ride and a walking safari while there. Then it was on to Masai Mara National Reserve. After check in and lunch, we embarked on a game drive and spotted all of the Big 5. Samuel was in communication with other drivers and was excellent in getting to where the animals were. We spent all of the next day in the Masai Mara, witnessing many things, including lions feeding on a topi and a leopard in a tree that had an impala draped over a branch. We had to change drivers at the Tanzania border, and Alex, our new driver was excellent as well. We spent 2 days in the Central Serengeti and 2 more days in the Southern Serengeti, a full day in each location, seeing the Big 5 again and thousands of wildebeest and calves. Alex was also in communication with other drivers and is an excellent spotter. We saw three cheetah brothers atop a rock and another mother cheetah with two cubs. All this in addition to the many other animals in the park. Many many zebra, giraffes, cape buffalo, gazelles and impala. We then drove to the Ngorongoro Crater and saw all but the leopard of the Big 5 there, in addition to zebra, gazelles, impala, flamingos and other birds. Then on to the Kenyan border and another driver switch. John, our new driver, was as excellent as the other two. Our destination was Amboseli National Park, and he gave us information on many of the animals there and was excellent in spotting them. We had an afternoon game drive and then a full day game the next day. John took us to the Nairobi airport and we were met there by Rose. Then onward back home. The accommodations were tented camps in most places. This was expected, as many of them are in the park and there are no fancy hotels. Very comfortable rooms/tents, all with toilets and showers. We spent 2 nights in four different camps. I cannot say enough great things about Camptrek Safaris. They met all of our expectations above and beyond. The vehicles were comfortable, in spite of the road conditions (many pot holes and ruts in the dirt and gravel roads) We saw hundreds of different safari companies while on the game drives. I cannot imagine any of them could be better than Camptrek Safaris. They provided us with a lifetime of memories and are very thankful to them. Special thanks to our travel coordinator Rose, and our three drivers - Samuel, Alex, and John.Posted on Severine RVerified Amazing 10days trip safari and camping We returned home amazed after a 10-day camping safari trip with Eric and Mambo from Camptrek across Kenya. Travelling with them was so easy, so meticulously organised and professional that we felt completely at ease throughout the trip, allowing us to fully enjoy the landscapes, culture, game drives and animals. The entire trip was an opportunity for excellent exchanges and discussions with our guides, allowing us to discover the country and the regions we travelled through in greater depth. Thank you again for this amazing trip!Posted on d wVerified Camptrek Safari Company : Wonderful From the moment I emailed the company, until the drop off at the airport to return home, Camptrek was prompt, professional, thorough, and above all, accommodating to our group of 12! Margaret replied to my email with speed and ideas for a customized trip that included my 96 year old father and a sister with Downs Syndrome. After many emails and a what’s app call to summarize the trip a few days before the departure to Nairobi, Margaret made me feel so confident that the trip would be a success. Once we arrived, she was there with a sign so we could board the jeeps quickly. Waiting for us were the BEST drivers/ guides who would make our safari day and evening experiences a dream of a lifetime. Geofrey and Pili made us feel welcomed and informed about every aspect of the safari experience such as pointing out small details about animals, culture , people, or anything any of us wanted to know! We quickly formed a bond that I know will bring us together again! I recommend Camptrek to everyone reading this review. I will definitely keep them at the top of my list as a company, but even more as new friends! Thank you Margaret, Geofrey, and Pili!Posted on Maurice GVerified Awesome Safari Trip!!!! My trip to Kenya was made great because we used Camptrek Safaris for our Safari excusrsion. Three things remained constant on our trip: 1. They were always on time 2. They kept us engaged in all parts of our trip 3. They were always kind We were a group of 12 traveling with our 96 year old patriarch and they made everyone feel special as if the trip was just for them. The team was top notch and I absolutely had no complaints. If you are looking for a team that will put you first and make you feel special Camptrek Safaris is the team.Posted on Mads HVerified Excellent Safari. Good value for money We (a family of five from Denmark with age of children being 10, 13 and 15 years) had a very good private safari with Camptrek Safaris. We booked a 4 night/5 day safari that took us to Masai Mare, Lake Nakuru, Naiwasha and Hell’s Gate National Park. Lucy was always very fast and helpful when communicating with her during the booking from Denmark, and she was there to send us off in Nairobi and when we came back after the safari. And our driver, Pili Pili, was exellent. Thank you CampTrek Safaris. This is a trustworthy company. Thanks!Posted on Stephen SVerified Amazing Animals, Resorts, and Scenery 7-day Amonoseli to Lake Naivasha to Lake Nakuru to Masia Mara Bring binoculars! Even when you're close to the animals using the binoculars makes it feels like you are living in an episode of a nature documentary. We selected camptrek after getting 5 quotes and from our research they were the best pick for a balance of luxury and cost. You'll be staying at the same spot as other groups so it really comes down to price and your driver. You can look up the resorts individually and spot which companies charge more for cheaper rooms, we found camptrek had the best value here. https://kibosafaricamp.com/ ^this set the bar so high. The dinning area has a giant tree growing out of it, an ostrich went swimming with us, and there's a nice walking path. https://www.lakenaivasha-soparesort.com/ ^wildlife everywhere (giraffe, zebra, hippo, etc.). Close runner up for favorite. https://www.sopalodges.com/lake-nakuru-sopa-lodge/the-lodge ^Great room with good view. But top two offered more. https://zebraplainscollection.com/zebra-river-camp/ ^this was a wet blanket after the other spots. It just didn't have the same wow factor. We had seen hippos from our room at Naivasha so the viewing tower was cool but not the same level. The fans were so loud we just slept without any covers. The hot water had no pressure and there were no locks on the doors. The live music and staff were good but couldn't compensate for the place itself. Neither could the food, which was the best we had all trip (inc. Radisson Arboretum and Kempinski*) but much less of a selection then other resorts. *This is meant for business people and we had just come off a 5 day trek. Don't stay here unless you want to "feel fancy," go to Radisson Arboretum instead for a better overall experience. We had a great time with our driver Ben. We always felt safe around the animals, driving between resorts, and at resorts. A lot of the time you can see all the other resort vehicles around you, and I can confirm that we were always near the front of the pack able to see. Often even the closest to the action. The two books he had in his car are worth flipping through and keeping track of what you have seen/learning about the animals/birds. Read the forwards in the books to really appreciate what they took to make, no AI garbage back then. The wildlife is striking and the scenery something to truly behold. A good mix of tropical and desert. The two lakes felt very different from Mara and Amboseli, creating a unique experience each day. The food is buffet style and some items are great others only okay. The desserts are "European style" (low sugar) but this grew on us a lot. Kenyans, the subset we interacted with at least, call fruit dessert so appreciate the health benefits and buy oreos/similar at a rest stop if you need them (which we did for ice cream, my greatest vice). The hell's gate bike ride and lake boat tour are definitely worth it. The walking safari at Naivasha was good but it does take some time that might be better spent enjoying the cool Naivasha Sopa Resort! So if money/time allows do it but don't feel you have to. Masia tribe visit was very quick then they want you to buy things. Supporting them is worth it but you could cut this and not miss much. Note with 7 days and 4 locations you move frequently and spend 4-6 hours in a car regularly moving locations. This is unavoidable without adding more days or reducing locations. The driving took it's toll but we wouldn't change what we did, although if you have the time/money add a day or two! Camptrek Safaris excelled in providing a brilliant itinerary customised to our preferences and offered excellent and professional service from the first enquiry to our final footsteps on African soil. The many National Parks were beautiful and unique and our expert and friendly guides took great care and patience to ensure that we saw as much wildlife as possible. Those only wanting to see the Big 5 won’t be disappointed but we enjoyed the smaller, more difficult to find, birds and mammals that were as equally exciting. The accommodation was varied but each lodge offered a very high standard of comfort, service and location. The vehicles are built to tackle all terrains and we three had plenty of space and visibility. Well done all at Camptrek Safaris - we shall definitely travel with you in the future!
