Located in northwestern Uganda along the legendary River Nile, Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest and oldest national park, famous for its dramatic waterfalls, powerful river landscapes, and classic African safari experiences. Established in 1952, the park protects vast savannah plains, riverine forests, and wetlands surrounding the world-famous Murchison Falls, where the mighty Nile River explodes through a narrow 7-meter gorge before crashing 43 meters below in one of Africa’s most spectacular natural wonders.
What makes Murchison Falls truly unique is the extraordinary combination of powerful waterfalls and traditional big game safaris within a single destination. Few places in Africa offer travelers the chance to cruise along the River Nile surrounded by hippos, crocodiles, elephants, and buffalo before witnessing the world’s longest river force itself violently through a tiny rock gap creating thunderous mist and rainbow-filled scenery.
Historically, the park gained global recognition after being visited by famous explorers including Winston Churchill, who described Uganda as the “Pearl of Africa.” The area later became one of East Africa’s most iconic safari destinations and remains deeply connected to the exploration history of the Nile River.
Today, Murchison Falls National Park is home to four of Africa’s Big Five animals alongside giraffes, lions, leopards, hyenas, antelopes, and more than 450 bird species including the rare shoebill stork. The park’s northern sector offers some of Uganda’s best game drives while the Nile River creates extraordinary boat safari experiences found nowhere else in East Africa.
Luxury travelers are increasingly drawn to Murchison Falls because of its unique blend of river safaris, wildlife encounters, dramatic scenery, and elegant safari lodges overlooking the Nile. Whether watching elephants cross the riverbanks at sunset or standing near the roaring falls themselves, Murchison delivers one of Uganda’s most unforgettable safari adventures.
