Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Overview

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park – Uganda’s Hidden Volcano Gorilla Safari

Nestled high in the misty Virunga Mountains of southwestern Uganda near the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo lies Mgahinga Gorilla National Park — Uganda’s smallest yet one of its most spectacular national parks. Famous for mountain gorilla trekking, volcanic landscapes, and rare golden monkey encounters, Mgahinga offers one of East Africa’s most exclusive and scenic safari experiences.

Covering approximately 33 square kilometers, the park forms part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, one of Africa’s most important mountain gorilla habitats. Mgahinga protects three extinct volcanic mountains — Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Sabyinyo — creating dramatic scenery of bamboo forests, lava caves, crater landscapes, and cloud-covered peaks unlike anywhere else in Uganda.

What makes Mgahinga truly unique is that it is the only national park in Uganda where travelers can experience both mountain gorilla trekking and golden monkey trekking within the same destination. These endangered golden monkeys, known for their striking golden-orange fur and playful behavior, are found only within the Virunga volcanic forests of East Africa.

Historically, the region is deeply connected to the indigenous Batwa people, one of Africa’s oldest forest communities who once lived within the rainforest before conservation efforts transformed the area into a protected national park in 1991. Today, visitors can participate in the famous Batwa Cultural Trail, offering powerful insight into ancient forest survival traditions, medicinal plants, hunting techniques, and spiritual practices.

Luxury travelers are increasingly drawn to Mgahinga because of its exclusivity, fewer crowds, dramatic mountain scenery, and intimate wildlife encounters. Unlike busier gorilla trekking destinations, Mgahinga often feels peaceful and untouched, allowing visitors to enjoy deeply personal experiences within the ancient volcanic rainforest.

Whether hiking volcanic peaks, tracking gorillas through mist-covered forests, or encountering endangered golden monkeys beneath bamboo canopies, Mgahinga delivers one of Uganda’s most magical and unforgettable safari adventures.
